John Hall, Director of the Kennedy Orchestras, holds a Master of Music degree in
Bass performance from the University of Georgia and Bachelor of Arts degree from
Mercer University in Speech and Dramatic Arts. He completed his teacher licensure
work at the University of Iowa. Mr. Hall is currently ABD on a doctorate in
doublebass performance from the University of Memphis. He is a current member of
Orchestra Iowa (formerly Cedar Rapids symphony) where he has held the position of
section bassist since 1997.
Mr. Hall has been teaching Orchestra at Kennedy since 2002. Prior to teaching at
Kennedy he taught orchestra at Taft, Wilson and Linn Mar schools. He has been a
faculty member at the Orchestra Iowa Symphony School since coming to Iowa in 1997,
where he continues to give private instruction in doublebass.
In addition to teaching orchestra in the Cedar Rapids Community School district,
Mr. Hall has taught bass at the University of Northern Iowa, Kirkwood, Cornell and
Augustana Colleges. He was on the faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for eight
summers teaching bass, music theory and chamber music. He is a former member of
the Memphis Symphony, and has performed with many regional symphony orchestras
throughout the midwest and southern United States.
Mr. Hall won the Brazilian Training Program scholarship at the University of
Georgia which included a summer of performing, teaching and study in Porto Alegre,
Brazil. He also performed in Rome, Italy as Associate Principal Bass with the Rome
Festival Orchestra and in Paris, France as Principal Bass with the Blue Lake
Faculty Chamber Players. Mr. Hall toured Europe in 2000 as a faculty bass coach
with the Blue Lake International Youth Orchestra performing in Germany, France and
Mr Hall was the recipient of the ‘A+ for Education’ award from KCRG
TV in 2005 and was named the 2009 Studio Teacher of the Year by the Iowa String
Teacher Association (ISTA).
Mr. Hall is an active performer on the Cedar Rapids music scene. In addition to
performing with Orchestra Iowa, he plays Tower of Power style R&B with FunkStop,
jazz with Summit, and classic rock with Stranded in Iowa. Mr. Hall spent ten years
on the road playing electric bass in a band with his brother called Silverwing. The
group performed with many big name acts of the time including Molly Hatchet, Pat
Travers, Gregg Allman, Black Oak Arkansas, Steppenwolf, Nazareth, Leon Russell and
others. Mr. Hall has recorded with members of the Allman Brothers band and was
invited to their studio in Tallahassee, Florida to audition for the band in 1989.
