We are pleased to announce the 23nd year of our string orchestra festival for middle school/junior high students. This festival will provide your better students an opportunity to further their skills as they work with noted clinicians. We will have three ensembles; the Green and Gold Orchestras which will be of equal ability, and the Chamber Orchestra which is a smaller ensemble reserved for the most advanced students.
Chamber Orchestra nominations should be limited to only the students whom you consider to be the single top players in your program. Ideally, each participating school will be represented by one student in the Chamber Orchestra. Students may be selected for Chamber based upon instrumentation needs of the ensemble. All students nominated for Chamber, Green and Gold Orchestras need to be mature and experienced enough to maintain focus through a long day of rehearsing. Please continue to nominate your top students for the Green and Gold Orchestras, as strong leadership for these groups is essential and they will be performing quality literature while working with excellent clinicians.
Below are some guidelines for Chamber Orchestra selection:
Violin, Viola, Cello: Suzuki Book 6 or higher. Violas should be comfortable reading in treble clef. Cellos should be able to read tenor clef.
Bass: Comfortable in all positions up to thumb with secure shifting technique and intonation. Tenor clef reading may also be required.
We are happy to offer online nomination and registration for each of your schools. You are invited to nominate as many of your finer students as you wish. We do want you to nominate only your best but no limit will be placed on the number that you nominate. Please rank the students according to their standing in your overall orchestra program (not just for their particular grade/orchestra.) 9th grade students are also eligible and encouraged to participate in the festival.
The deadline for applications will be January
19 2013. It will assist greatly in organizing the festival if you can complete online nominations by the due date.
Registration materials due date Feb. 8
Acceptance letters, registration materials and music will be emailed out in late January. You will be guaranteed that at least three members overall will be selected. An important advantage of this festival for students is that they will have the opportunity to audition for chair placement. This audition will be on the festival music only. The festival day will begin with registration at 8:00-9:00 a.m. Students from the Gold Orchestra and Chamber will begin auditions at 9:00 a.m., while students in the Green Orchestra will rehearse together at 9:00 a.m. and begin their auditions at approximately 10:30 a.m. Rehearsals continue through the morning and afternoon with breaks for lunch and dinner, and end with a concert at 6:00 p.m.
The date of the festival is Saturday, March 2, 2013.
The fee for accepted students will be $10.00. Directors should let their students know if their school is paying the participation fee or if the individual student is responsible. In addition, we will be offering meals, T-Shirts and CD recordings. Participation fees should be sent to : Kennedy Orchestra, 4545 Wenig Rd. NE , 52402 along with meal, t-shirt, and concert reservations. Please make checks payable to Kennedy Orchestra Parents. Participation fee is due Feb.
A decided emphasis on quality will be placed on all aspects of this festival. Your students should be the best from our state and they will perform music of very high quality.
